PROJECT OVERVIEWThe simplest way to consume
Puffco is a cannabis tech startup specializing in the creation of premium consumption experiences for the modern-day cannabis consumer. Given concentrates’ sticky and viscous nature, the process of handling and consuming is a cumbersome and messy process. The Hot Knife aims to resolve this conflict by the use of heat. During our testing, we found that by warming the concentrate, it became runny and less sticky, resulting in a simple and intuitive experience.
The Process
Design and engineering worked in tandem to validate the technology and define the size constraints while exploring form, function, and ergonomics in parallel. Our goal was to create a compact and affordable product that still felt luxurious. Achieving this goal required many iterations and clever use of materials and processes.
Prototyping: While engineering built a works-like prototype, the design team rapidly prototyped, working through the product experience, features, and ergonomics.
High Fidelity Samples: After narrowing the form and internal components down, we pursued two parallel paths to keep pushing the boundaries on what we can achieve while staying within budget.
Packaging Design: After the final form was locked, the package design began with our goal for a fully recyclable solution.
The Solution
The Heated Loading Tool is a battery-powered loading tool that empowers users to transfer sticky concentrates with control and ease. It features a glazed ceramic tip with an integrated heating element, that warms the sticky concentrate, releasing it from the tool with a press of a button. The anodized aluminum housing gives a premium look and feel, resulting in a simple, intuitive, and compact product.
